This is a film of last assembly at old Blenheim site of Blenheim Middle School. The school moved to new premises in 1975 at Woodhouse Community Complex, Crowther Place, Leeds, LSG 2ST. The Head Teacher, Joan Mallett, and Deputies Geoff Backhouse and Margaret Burrow are featured.
The film opens with a shot of Blenheim Middle School from a roundabout on the road outside. Cars and a yellow lorry pass along the road in front of the school.
Outside the school gates looking in, a row of children are standing in the schoolyard holding on to the metal railings/fence and peering through. The camera zooms in on them, especially the boy on the end of the row who grins cheekily at the camera while the others chat amongst themselves
Inside the classroom, there is a close up of gap between two desks. The camera pans along one desk and shows a child’s hand writing on some sheets of paper spread out on the desk. The camera moves out and up and the rest of the boy comes into view. The camera moves to another area of the classroom there a boy and girl are working at a pair of desks. The girl turns to talk to the boys at the pair of desks on the other side. Other children are working at desks scattered around the room. The camera again pans across the four students. The camera moves to a pair of desks where one boy is making a paper aeroplane, the other is reading a comic. The camera zooms in on the desks behind them, where other boys are making more paper aeroplanes.
Inside the staffroom, teachers are sitting around the room in chairs, some working some talking. All turn to face the camera.
Now in the schoolyard, the camera is turned towards the ground where children’s feet are visible. The camera pans up to the children who wave back. Beyond them are the school railings though which people and cars can be seen on the street. On another area of the playground children are running about. A pair of girls stands in the foreground looking at the camera. The camera zooms in beyond them to a group of waving children, and a group behind them who are climbing on a fence trying to look in through a window. Further shot of schoolyard, kids running about in the foreground, two others standing in from of green fence lining the boundary of the playground. Beyond the fence are rows of houses which become clearer as the camera zooms out showing more children and more of the yard. In alleyway between fence and side of school building, children stand on tiptoe to see the camera. Two children duck and crouch on the floor out of the way.
Inside the school hall, an assembly takes place. The camera is stationed behind rows of children. Over their heads can see two teachers, one male, one female. The lady (deputy heads -Margaret Burrow and Geoff Backhouse?) is talking to the students. Camera shows group of children standing up singing while a teacher plays the piano, and pans forward over rows of children to teachers also singing at the front of the hall. Teacher (headmistress - Joan Mallett?) reading to pupils from a book. There is footage of pupils listening, standing to sing, and filing out of the hall.
Inside the classroom, pupils are gathered around teacher, helping to pack up the classroom.
Now in the car park, teachers stand around cars, and a removal van pulls up. A piano is loaded in the van.
Someone is sweeping up in the schoolyard, and there are views of the red brick school buildings and the school gates.
Shot from the front passenger seat of a red car, the journey to the new school, following a J. Peters removal van, is filmed. Other cars and vans are at the new school buildings. There are exterior shots of school, all glass and concrete, and teachers carry armfuls of school property around. The piano is pushed into the school, and finally the removal vans leave.
Inside the new school, supplies are unpacked, and some of the teachers sit in the staffroom. Others arrange desks, tables and chairs in classrooms. The film ends as a teacher waves her hand towards finished classroom.
