A film made by former Yorkshire and England cricket player, turned journalist, Bill Bowes showing a tour of Australia at the time of the Ashes. The film includes some good action sequences from the test matches themselves, as well as of the players away from the games. Matches include Australia v England, 5th Test at Sydney, 25 February- 3 March, 1955 and Wellington v MCC at Basin Reserve, Wellington, New Zealand on 19-22 March, 1955.
The film begins with the scoreboard at the beginning of the 5th test Sydney in 1955, with Hutton and Graveney opening for England and Lindwell bowling for Australia, having won the toss. The teams come out and play begins with Hutton being caught behind for 6, to be replaced by May. Several overs are bowled, with 6 slip fielders. Graveney gets his 50 up. At lunch England are 204 for 4, with Bailey on 6 and Compton on 2. The scoreboard shows Graveney getting 111, and May 79.
The film switches to on board a flight and the players arriving at Christchurch airport, New Zealand. Some members of the team stroll around the gardens of a timber framed house and a church. There is a cricket game at a local village green. Some streets in Christchurch are filmed, including a tram and the Cathedral. The England cricketers warm up before a game, and a team photo is taken. The teams walk off for lunch. One of the players messes about with a giant bat. Some afternoon play is filmed before the teams come off for the end of the day’s play. Some members of the party take a boat ride along the coast and arrive in another city. Several of the bowlers show how they grip the ball, whilst some batsmen practise in the nets.
A scoreboard is shown with the MCC scoring 204 in their first innings. The teams come off, led by Colin Cowdrey with the bat, and the scoreboard is shown being changed. The players go for a walk in the hills above a coastal town. On their sightseeing tour they see seabirds and visit a Māori village, where the residents perform a dance and demonstrate traditional methods of making clothes and wood carvings. They also visit hot water fountains, with children playing in the hot water springs. People fish on a river and swim in the sea. They visit mountain ranges and waterfalls, and take a plane ride over snow-capped mountain peaks.
