The film begins with a woman speaking to a group of people outside the Salvation Army building, followed by a view over Denaby Main Colliery. The film then shows the street sign for Maltby Street in Denaby, and a view down the street of terraced houses. People can be seen entering a church, and a large group of people making their way to the church with Cadeby Colliery on a hill in the distance. A woman walks past pushing a pram, before another woman gets up on a chair and addresses the group. Two women go from door-to-door around the terraced houses, whilst the woman on the chair continues to speak. This is followed by two men also knocking door-to-door. At one house a woman comes out and they speak to her and give her a leaflet. A group of women walk into what might be the rear of the church where there are empty bins and buckets. The group gather for a photograph as the film comes to an end.
Context
Looming collieries, red bricked alleys and terraced housing present an archetypal snapshot of the coal mining community in a place once known as ‘Denaby Main Colliery Village.’ Whilst students embark on their project, knocking on doors and handing out leaflets, the teacher’s film shows an active industrial landscape - only a few years before the village’s dramatic rebuild.

Built for purpose, Denaby, located between Rotherham and Doncaster, was a working settlement, establishing its reputation as a coal village since the 1860s. Two collieries were at the heart of the area; Denaby Main and neighbouring Cadeby Main. Despite the major mining incident at Cadeby in 1912, Denaby colliery shut its doors earlier in 1968. The closure was a potent signal of the industry’s decline and in the same year, the village underwent a major re-building process. Moving away from its industrial past, terraced houses were demolished, making space for modern housing. |
