This is part of the collection of films made by Sheffield teacher William Gordon Gregory. The film shows open cast mining of coal and building materials.
The film begins with two lorries emptying their load of coal into a bunker covered by a steel grid, from where the coal is transported along by conveyer belt.
After a break, the film switches to show a felled tree with a sign attached to it, declaring ‘Please close this gate’. A large tree truck is transported off on a cart near a village church with a tall spire. After showing more fallen trees the film returns to the open cast mine where coal is being loaded into trucks. There is another open cast mine quarrying stone, with a rock face that has been wired with explosives and a large crane in operation. Workers attach large drill bits to a drill to go into the rock. After drilling the drill bit is pulled out and the cutting edge is examined. Gelignite is then pushed into the hole using long poles.
The film then shows a long line of trucks ready for loading, and then it switches to other trucks being loaded with coal from a hopper. On the side of a building a chart has been painted with a graph showing how much has been mined for the month of July, with a target of one million tons; and the film comes to an end.
