Title – The Three Peaks
The film begins at 2.30 am in the early morning darkness in Glen Nevis, Scotland, with a group of teachers from Greenhead Grammar School, Keighley, making breakfast. They are attempting the three peaks, starting at sea level at Fort William and finishing at sea level at Caernarvon, going up Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowden.
The film then switches to show the group setting out the previous day from the school in Keighley. The business committee is set up to organise the expedition, with Chris Ashton, George Asquith, Stewart Jackson and Linda Brecks. Helpers are shown putting together the handbook they had produced to raise money. They are then out on the streets of Keighley selling the booklet, raising over £50. Then at 3.40 am on June 21st 1975 the first of four teams leave Fort William for Ben Nevis. The all-female Renault team are not far behind to make the first official women’s record for the task. They’re followed by the Fiat team, and at 4 am the last team as the first light appears. The team drivers watch with binoculars as they make their way up the mountain. George Asquith is interviewed, as is Sheila Robbins and Mark Holmes.
Some climbers on Ben Nevis – John Lockwood, Alistair McDonald and Stewart Jackson – are featured and followed by others. There is a view from the summit before the climbers are shown in training in the gym. They ascend and descend Ben Nevis in 2 hours 20 minutes. They then set off for Scafell. Chris Ashton is interviewed about why 13 people want to do this challenge. He explains that they have three aims: to break the record, to raise money towards a school minibus, and to raise money to provide equipment for handicapped children. Then Stewart Jackson is interviewed about the sponsorship.
They cross the Ballachulish Bridge, at Loch Leven, before getting into their sponsored car and driving off. George is one of the drivers, in his own car, which he drives in competitions. Then Chris Ashton is shown at his hobby of fly fishing. Then at Rossthwaite for the Scafell checkpoint, with the assistants. The women arrive having experienced navigational difficulties in Scotland. At Scafell summit they check in with the timekeepers and take a rest in the heat, before heading back down. Wendy is interviewed about her role. She explains how the cars are sponsored, and where from. Many of the local sponsors are filmed.
Then they are shown in Wasdale, before setting out again. Stewart is then shown out canoeing, while Mike Holmes is shown looking through a telescope, as his hobby is astronomy. Linda is shown doing her hobby, Scottish dancing. Then the first team arrive at Snowden at 6 pm, and start their climb at 7 pm. At the top they register with the army time keepers. They make their down by a different route, and to the finish at the waterfront at Caernarvon. The first car arrives at 10 minutes to 8, shortly followed by the next one, with John Lockwood and Alistair McDonald in the best time, beating the previous record by four hours. They are then interviewed and the teams are read out with their times.
